Today's aircraft are highly sophisticated machines designed to undertake a wide variety of demanding missions in ever-more crowded skies. Furthermore, innovative aircraft designs are emerging, from tiny micro drones to massive 600-ton transport planes. To maintain safe and effective operations in this evolving landscape, we need advanced flight control technologies, greater automation, superior training methods, and optimized pilot-vehicle interaction. The study of flight dynamics and control focuses on accurately modeling aircraft behavior and developing systems to guide their movements toward specific goals. At Penn State, faculty and student researchers are exploring numerous aspects of this discipline, including simulation techniques, navigation systems, trajectory optimization, sensor data interpretation, unmanned aircraft operations, flight performance characteristics, and other related areas.
