The Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) program specializing in Piano Performance equips students for careers in professional piano performance and academic instruction. Graduates emerge with comprehensive knowledge of piano repertoire and broader musical studies, qualifying them to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The curriculum includes intensive keyboard training, piano literature studies, pedagogical methods, alongside music theory, analysis, and history - providing versatile preparation for various teaching roles. The program mandates at least four semesters of residency. Candidates undergo a qualifying examination following their second residency semester, with a comprehensive exam upon finishing all coursework. Degree completion requires five public performances: three solo recitals from memory and two chamber music presentations. While no traditional thesis is needed, students must deliver a lecture-recital accompanied by an approved scholarly monograph.
The School of Music requires the completion of a recognized baccalaureate degree in music or music education, with a junior/senior grade-point average of 3.00 or higher (on a 4.00 scale).
