The Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) program cultivates well-rounded musicians by focusing on exceptional artistry and academic expertise. This curriculum equips students for professional careers in high-level performance, instruction, or creative work. Typically requiring at least two years beyond a master's degree, the DMA mandates full-time residency during the first year with a minimum 9-credit course load per term. Students may begin with one summer session before residency. All DMA requirements must be fulfilled within seven years of enrollment, combining a primary specialization with elective minor studies. Successful performers require comprehensive musical education and adaptability. At Hartt, instrumentalists gain expertise in performance techniques, teaching methods, and professional growth through solo, ensemble, and chamber music experiences covering traditional and contemporary pieces. Numerous collaborative performance opportunities exist, including accompaniment for operas, dance performances, and musical theater productions.
