The Biomedical Engineering program focuses on systematically blending traditional and contemporary engineering concepts with life sciences and health care. Biomedical Engineers utilize these capabilities to drive advancements in the health care sector, fundamental biological research, and the foundations of medical treatment.
In alignment with Penn State University's and the College of Engineering's objectives, the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering at Penn State strives to produce top-tier engineers who, upon graduation, will advance societal and economic progress by applying engineering to address challenges in medicine and biology.
Biomedical engineering involves employing life sciences, mathematics, and engineering fundamentals to identify and resolve issues in biology, medicine, health care, and similar areas. These engineers design, develop, and enhance medical equipment like prosthetics, artificial organs, and imaging technologies. They also create tools, health information systems, and management and delivery systems to optimize health care operations. Numerous Bachelor of Science graduates in biomedical engineering further their education by pursuing advanced degrees in medicine, engineering, and related disciplines such as biostatistics, public health, and health administration.
The majority of Penn State’s applications come from traditional, first-year students. The following types of students are considered first-year applicants (or freshman applicants, as some refer to them): Current high school student in his or her senior year; Student who has earned a high school diploma or a GED and has no post-secondary coursework; Student who has attempted 17 or fewer credits (semester hours) of college coursework at a regionally accredited college/university before attending Penn State; Current high school student who may have enrolled in another institution(s) before graduating from high school (dual enrollment); Student who may have attended Penn State on a nondegree basis.
