The microbiology graduate program offers both Ph.D. and M.S. degree pathways. This interdisciplinary program covers diverse microbiology fields, from environmental and pathogenic studies to molecular genetics and biochemistry, incorporating ecological, organismal, and biochemical approaches. Faculty members from multiple departments serve as primary advisors.
There are two entry pathways into the Microbiology program:
1. Through a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) funded by the primary advisor's research grants. This option requires direct agreement between the student and professor, contingent upon available grant funding.
2. Via a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) covering the first three terms, where students assist in undergraduate microbiology labs while exploring potential thesis advisors. This rotation system allows students to experience different research labs before committing to a thesis project - M.S. candidates must decide by their second term, Ph.D. candidates by their third term. Most students transition to GRA support after this initial period.
