Crop and Soil Science covers all aspects from soil composition to plant cultivation: natural ecosystems, agricultural crop production, economic impacts in both rural and urban settings, and stewardship of natural resources. With a wide array of courses and partnerships spanning public and private institutions, students in this field acquire expertise to enhance agricultural practices and resource management in Oregon and globally. The curriculum emphasizes building secure food supplies, advancing eco-friendly farming methods, and conserving vital water and soil assets. Students can specialize in one of three concentrations: Soil Science, Agronomy, or Plant Breeding, Genetics & Genomics.
The Soil Science specialization equips learners with comprehensive knowledge about the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of this fundamental resource. Students investigate critical challenges such as water conservation, organic farming techniques, soil erosion control, land rehabilitation, and maintaining soil vitality. Professionals in this field develop practical solutions for sustainable development across urban, agricultural, forest, rangeland, and other environmental contexts.
