The accounting services field is evolving to encompass both wider scope and greater specialization. Significant shifts in the accounting profession demand enhanced and modernized educational approaches. A four-year undergraduate degree no longer suffices as the baseline education for professional accountants. While 120 college credit hours qualify candidates to take the Uniform CPA Exam, Virginia's Board of Accountancy mandates 150 semester hours for CPA licensure. Furthermore, accounting graduates now face a vastly expanded range of career paths, necessitating specialized training in areas like operational auditing, fraud detection, managerial accounting, and taxation. Consequently, the optimal accounting education framework combines a comprehensive undergraduate foundation with a Master of Science (MS) in Accounting program. Old Dominion University's MS in Accounting caters to both full-time and part-time learners through evening course offerings.
Goal: To deliver a curriculum that fosters professional judgment, healthy skepticism, and analytical abilities that enhance decision-making effectiveness.

Specialization Options: Students can tailor their studies through two concentration paths: Financial Management caters to those focused on operational and financial leadership, while Taxation equips students with skills for tax strategy and compliance. Both tracks lead to opportunities in Public Accounting, Corporate, or Government/Nonprofit sectors and provide preparation for CPA certification along with other professional credentials (including CMA, CIA, CFE, CISA, CGFM).
