Recognized among the nation's top graduate tax programs, the Carlson School Master of Business Taxation (MBT) equips students with both theoretical tax knowledge and hands-on expertise in applying tax regulations within business contexts. The curriculum extends beyond technical tax courses to include studies in government tax policy, economic taxation strategies, negotiation techniques, and cutting-edge tax technology and analytics. Students benefit from instruction by renowned faculty members—seasoned professionals with substantial practical experience and deep connections to the Twin Cities business network. This integration of academic rigor and industry expertise fosters a comprehensive understanding of how taxation intersects with broader business challenges, equipping graduates for advanced roles in management and consulting. Approximately 80% of participants balance their studies with professional employment, attending evening classes from 5:45-9:05 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Starting fall 2018, students can opt for a fully online MBT option or blend online and in-person courses. The program respects tax professionals' seasonal workloads by pausing spring semester courses from early March to April 15. Part-time students typically graduate in three years, while full-time students can accelerate their completion timeline.
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
The following required prerequisite courses may be taken after being admitted to the MBT program, but must be taken before being eligible to take any MBT courses: ACCT 2050 and ACCT 5135. Equivalent courses may be substituted with approval of the director of graduate studies.
