The Mathematics Department provides three doctoral focus areas: Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Mathematics Education. The Ph.D. program is designed to equip mathematicians for careers in academic teaching, university research, or industrial research settings. As the most advanced academic degree, Ph.D. holders must demonstrate comprehensive mathematical understanding alongside specialized research capabilities in their chosen field. For those pursuing roles focused on teaching and mathematics education research, the department offers a dedicated Mathematics Education Ph.D. specialization.
The pure mathematics Ph.D. track prepares graduates for careers in university research, industrial research, and collegiate teaching. Students completing this degree should achieve broad competency in fundamental mathematical disciplines while developing the ability to conduct autonomous, innovative research within their specialization.
