The Mathematics Department provides three doctoral focus areas (Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Mathematics Education). The Ph.D. program is designed to equip mathematicians for careers in academic teaching, university research, or industrial research settings. As the most advanced academic degree, Ph.D. holders must demonstrate extensive mathematical understanding alongside specialized research capabilities. For those pursuing roles focused on teaching and mathematics education research, the Department provides a Mathematics Education specialization within the Ph.D. program.
The applied mathematics Ph.D. track prepares graduates for diverse opportunities in industry, government research facilities, and academic research/teaching positions. Students develop crucial skills in applying mathematical concepts by recognizing mathematical patterns in real-world situations.
