The Department of Microbiology boasts a distinguished legacy of educating top-tier scientists. As we embrace the genomic age and advancements in molecular life sciences, we're committed to cultivating future research leaders. Our Microbiology Master's program provides personalized graduate education within one of the country's premier teaching and research universities. You'll collaborate with international peers while designing your own academic path. The MS curriculum delivers adaptable options for exploring contemporary microbiology fields. Students can choose between Plan A (thesis-based) or Plan B (non-thesis) tracks, tailored to individual interests and lab availability. Both programs begin with foundational courses covering Genetics, Bioinformatics, Molecular Microbiology, and Ecology & Evolution, along with scientific communication training. Specialized electives enable focus areas within microbiology. The non-thesis option typically takes 1-2 years to complete, while thesis research extends the program to approximately 2 years, with research credits counting toward degree requirements. Exceptional students may transition into our PhD program, where completed MS coursework can fulfill doctoral requirements.
