The doctoral program in oral biology brings together an interdisciplinary team of twenty-nine faculty members from three health sciences colleges (dentistry, medicine, and veterinary medicine) along with the Comprehensive Cancer Center. This program primarily emphasizes hands-on laboratory training in research methodologies. Participants learn to formulate hypotheses, create coherent research plans, gather and interpret scientific data, and communicate research outcomes effectively. The curriculum equips students with knowledge of both contemporary and foundational scientific concepts relevant to dental and craniofacial studies. Additionally, the program trains students in selecting and investigating important scientific questions through modern research techniques. Research on mineralized tissues explores bone functionality, regulatory mechanisms, and the biomechanical/clinical effects of dental and orthopedic implants. Current studies focus on bone metabolism and material interactions at molecular, cellular, and tissue levels.
