The biology program offers students a choice between a research-focused path culminating in a Master of Science (MS) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in biology, or a non-research path resulting in a Master of Arts (MA) in biology. Those aiming to earn both a master's degree and secondary-level life sciences teaching certification can opt for the non-research Master of Science in biology (Teaching in the Life Sciences). Research degree candidates can pursue thesis or dissertation work across diverse specializations such as aquatic biology, ecology, microbiology, neurobiology, and plant biology, among others.
This degree program is built on four pillars: cutting-edge research, close faculty mentorship, excellent teaching, and community engagement. At the heart of our graduate offerings is original research that advances scientific knowledge. Research initiatives receive funding from various federal agencies, state programs, private organizations, and nonprofit institutions.
