The oral biology PhD program is an interdisciplinary initiative involving twenty-nine faculty members across three health sciences schools (dentistry, medicine, and veterinary medicine) and the Comprehensive Cancer Center. This program primarily emphasizes hands-on laboratory training in research methodologies. Participants acquire skills in hypothesis formulation, designing coherent research plans, gathering and interpreting scientific data, and presenting research outcomes. The curriculum prepares students to comprehend both contemporary and foundational scientific concepts relevant to dental and craniofacial studies. Additionally, the program trains students in selecting and investigating important scientific questions through modern research techniques. Current biomaterials research explores the physical, chemical, and biological properties of ceramics, metals, polymers, and composite materials. Investigative methods utilized include various spectrometry techniques, electron microscopy, cell culture studies, human visual assessment, mechanical testing, rheological analysis, thermal characterization (incorporating calorimetry and thermomechanical analysis), and x-ray diffraction studies.
