The English Department provides a combined MA/PhD program that allows graduate students to collaborate closely with renowned scholars and authors. Spanning from Chaucer's writings to Toni Morrison's works, from romanticism to postcolonial studies, from rhetoric and composition to digital platforms, from folklore to cinema, and from literacy research to book history - Ohio State's English graduate program introduces students to both classic and emerging areas in modern English studies, with several programs earning national acclaim. Beyond facilitating close collaboration with faculty on diverse research projects, the department provides exceptional teaching opportunities. New graduate students instruct in our First-Year Writing Program while receiving ongoing guidance and professional development. Advanced graduate students may progress to teaching second-year undergraduate writing courses, and PhD candidates who complete teaching apprenticeships can lead introductory undergraduate classes or assist with British and American literature survey courses. Additionally, through the Digital Media Project, graduate students gain experience using cutting-edge educational technology for teaching both writing and literature classes.
A baccalaureate or professional degree (or equivalent foreign credential) from an accredited college or university, earned by the expected date of entry into your graduate program. A minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in all prior undergraduate and graduate work.
