Students awarded the specialized cellular and molecular physiology designation will concentrate their studies on sophisticated techniques for investigating physiological and disease-related mechanisms. This program equips learners with knowledge of comprehensive biological strategies for analyzing diverse pathological conditions. Investigations in cellular/molecular physiology and cell biology aim to uncover the underlying causes of cardiovascular, digestive, neurological, and other organ system disorders. Physiological regulation can be examined across multiple scales, from individual molecular activities to broader societal and environmental influences. As an inherently interdisciplinary field, physiology integrates approaches from chemistry, mathematics, physics, and biology to explain and characterize the body's fundamental operations. Researchers frequently employ animal and cellular systems to study human illnesses and their advancement. By deciphering cellular, organ, and whole-body functions, we can pinpoint precise molecular targets crucial for creating treatments for various human ailments. Faculty and students in cellular and molecular physiology engage in research initiatives across multiple centers, including those focused on spinal cord injuries, aging, neuroscience, Reye's syndrome, diabetes/metabolism, comprehensive cancer, and cardiovascular/pulmonary studies.
