The Bachelor of Science in statistics emphasizes both theoretical foundations and practical applications, standing out as one of the nation's rare undergraduate statistics programs. Alongside comprehensive statistics coursework, students engage with computer science, professional ethics (pertaining to statisticians' workplace decisions), and advanced writing (an undeniably valuable skill). The program mandates focused study (16 credits) in an application area like computer science, engineering, natural sciences, economics, psychology, or another student-chosen discipline. For mathematics, we provide a foundational Bachelor of Arts degree and a more intensive Bachelor of Science option. (These degree titles, originating centuries ago, carry no standardized definition across institutions—some use them to indicate foreign language requirements, for instance. Our department designates the B.S. as an enhanced program requiring two extra mathematical sciences courses, an additional computer science course, and deeper exploration of a mathematics application field.) Additionally, we offer a Bachelor of Science in actuarial science through collaboration with the School of Business Administration.
