The Bachelor of Science in statistics emphasizes both theoretical foundations and practical applications, standing out as one of the nation's rare undergraduate statistics programs. Alongside comprehensive statistics coursework, students engage with computer science, professional ethics (crucial for statisticians' decision-making), and advanced writing (an invaluable professional skill). The program also mandates focused study (16 credits) in an application area like computer science, engineering, natural sciences, economics, psychology, or another student-selected discipline. For mathematics, we provide a foundational Bachelor of Arts degree and a more intensive Bachelor of Science option. (These degree titles, originating centuries ago, carry no standardized definition across institutions - some schools use them to indicate language requirements, for instance. Our department designates the B.S. as an enhanced program requiring two extra mathematical sciences courses, an additional computer science course, and deeper exploration of a mathematics application field.) Additionally, we offer a Bachelor of Science in actuarial science through collaboration with the School of Business Administration.
