The department provides multiple undergraduate degree options in French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. Students can pursue minors in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, or Spanish, with additional course offerings in Arabic and Hebrew. Those interested in teaching careers can enroll in the five-year secondary education teaching and certification program (STEP). Translation certificates are available in Chinese, French, German, or Spanish by completing courses 3550, 4550, and 4800 (note: 4800-level courses don't count toward major or minor requirements). For students pursuing other majors at Oakland University, additional major options exist in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish, requiring at least 24 credits at the 3000-4000 level in the chosen language. Alternatively, students may opt for a dual-language major (B.A.) to expand their linguistic expertise. All students must fulfill Oakland University's General Education Requirements, General College of Arts and Sciences Requirements, College Exploratory Requirement, Major Requirements, and sufficient elective credits to meet degree requirements (typically 124 credits minimum, though some programs may require more). Generally, no more than eight credits from one major, minor, or concentration can count toward another, though program coordinators may grant exceptions with written approval.
