Nova Southeastern University's Bachelor of Science in Secondary English Education program, which includes ESOL and Reading endorsements, prepares educators to foster academic achievement, fairness, cultural understanding, and civic engagement in varied learning environments. The curriculum offers specialized teaching methods courses tailored for English education and evaluation. It incorporates a distinctive element featuring diverse English, literature, and speech communication classes that form the core of the Florida Department of Education-recognized Secondary English Education concentration.
The coursework aligns with Florida Standards and the statewide English assessment for grades 6-12. Instructional materials are grounded in research and incorporate top educational approaches along with techniques for teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL).
The program culminates with a practical teaching internship - a 12-week, full-time school placement offering direct experience in creating lesson plans, delivering instruction, evaluating students, and engaging with parents and colleagues. Interns are paired with schools and certified educators who will work alongside NSU's supervision and faculty support. This immersive experience gradually increases responsibilities as participants become valued members of the school faculty. A dedicated mentor teacher provides weekly guidance as interns progress toward full classroom management, culminating in successful program completion.
If you’re planning to attend college for the first time after graduating from high school, you’re considered a freshman applicant at Nova Southeastern University.
