Northwestern University's Master of Fine Arts in Stage Design program trains a carefully chosen group of scenic, costume, and lighting designers for professional work in American and global theater, along with related design industries. This three-year curriculum focuses on deep collaboration between designers and directors, meticulous script analysis, comprehensive research, and fostering distinctive creative perspectives. We believe that dedicated, perceptive artists working in a collaborative setting will produce innovative, powerful theatrical productions.
The initial year concentrates on developing fundamental skills, technical training, and design methodology. Year two shifts focus toward teamwork, investigative work, and creative thinking, bridging the gap between student perspectives and professional designer mindsets. The concluding year centers on practical design work and assembling the thesis portfolio.
