The LSU MFA in Acting Program delivers intensive training in physical, vocal, emotional, and analytical performance techniques. As the main talent source for Swine Palace, LSU's Equity-affiliated theater company, MFA acting candidates gain hands-on experience. Students demonstrate their artistic growth through a 15-minute solo performance thesis, accompanied by an oral reflection on their creative journey, though a written thesis remains an alternative option.
Through daily practice, the program cultivates performers' physicality, vocal expression, creativity, and analytical skills—equipping them to embody roles authentically while maintaining artistic spontaneity. Participants learn to release restrictive tensions and embrace both internal and external creative stimuli with confidence and daring.
The curriculum emphasizes mastery of both classical and modern repertoire for stage and screen. As the headquarters for Seven Pillars Acting—a contemporary acting methodology rooted in Meisner and Stanislavski traditions—the LSU School of Theatre immerses first-year MFA students in this technique before advancing to practical application, stylistic exploration, and complex text work in the second year. Qualified graduate students may pursue certification to teach the Seven Pillars Acting method.
