The Mathematics Department at Northwestern University offers a PhD program focused exclusively on Pure Mathematics, with a flexible interpretation of the field. Those primarily interested in Applied Mathematics might find our program unsuitable, as we don't provide a Master's degree option. Our objective is to transform graduate students into accomplished research mathematicians. You'll benefit from our world-class faculty while enjoying the tight-knit community of a compact department. With an exceptionally favorable student-to-faculty ratio, intimate class settings, and strong student-faculty relationships, we provide personalized guidance that larger institutions often can't match.
Our department excels in numerous mathematical disciplines, spanning algebra, algebraic topology, differential equations, probability, dynamical systems and ergodic theory, homotopy theory, mathematical physics, number theory, and representation theory, among others. Whether you're drawn to one of these specific areas or have broad mathematical curiosity, our program can fulfill your academic aspirations. Prospective students with highly specialized interests not listed here should carefully examine our faculty's research specialties.
Admitted students must hold a U.S. bachelor’s degree or a comparable non-U.S. degree from a regionally accredited institution.
For the TOEFL, official scores must be less than two years old. On the internet based test an applicant must score 100 or higher, and we would like a score 26 or higher on the speaking portion. For the IELTS, an applicant must score 7.0 or higher.
