To obtain a Mathematics PhD, candidates must fulfill these key milestones:

Successfully complete all mandatory coursework
Pass required written qualifying exams
Complete the Advancement to Candidacy Oral Examination and submit Graduate Division documentation
Fulfill teaching experience requirements
Submit and defend the Doctoral Dissertation with accompanying Graduate Division paperwork
Upon admission to the doctoral program, students engage in a comprehensive regimen of coursework, seminars, and independent study to prepare for qualifying exams, candidacy requirements, and dissertation research.

All applicants must meet the following minimum academic requirements:

Hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California
Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0

TOEFL Score Requirements for Admission Consideration:

On the TOEFL iBT minimum score of 80
For the paper-based test, a minimum score of 550

IELTS Score Requirements for Admission Consideration:

An overall minimum score of 7 for admission, with a score of no less than 6 on any individual module.
Applicants who qualify for admission by the above criteria, and also achieve a score of 8 or higher on the Speaking module may be eligible to serve as a Teaching Assistant.
