Athletic training involves preventing, diagnosing, and treating emergency situations, sudden injuries, and long-term health issues related to physical impairments and disabilities. Northern Kentucky University's Athletic Training Program aims to educate future certified athletic trainers by offering personalized learning, varied hands-on experiences, and research opportunities, developing skilled professionals who will significantly improve healthcare locally and nationwide. Since 2006, NKU's program has maintained accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), demonstrating its compliance with national standards for training entry-level athletic trainers.

The Master of Science in Athletic Training combines academic study with practical clinical training. The curriculum follows the National Athletic Trainers Association's guidelines for both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills.

Through clinical practicum courses, students apply their learning in actual healthcare environments. They work under supervision at approved locations (both on and off campus) that match each course's educational focus. Every practicum includes mandatory clinical hours as outlined in the course details.
