The Entry-Level Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program combines core concepts, fundamental theories, and practical skill-building to apply the Occupational Therapy Process within modern and evolving practice environments. This curriculum equips students to become evidence-based practitioners capable of handling Evaluation, Intervention, and Outcomes for diverse populations—individuals, families, organizations, and communities—across various cultural and geographic contexts. Service settings may range from schools and hospitals to outpatient clinics, homes, workplaces, and community spaces.

Reflecting the College of Health and Human Services' commitment to interprofessional education, Occupational Therapy students will engage in teamwork and simulated scenarios to enhance collaborative care and improve client results. By merging foundational learning with hands-on interprofessional simulations, students gain deeper understanding and readiness for clinical practice.

Mission of the Entry-Level Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program: In alignment with Northern Kentucky University and the College of Health Professions, the Occupational Therapy Department fosters an innovative atmosphere that cultivates student achievement in academics, research, clinical work, leadership, and continuous learning to advance health through meaningful occupation.

ACCREDITATION

The entry-level OTD program has received Preaccreditation Status from the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), based at 7501 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 510E, Bethesda, MD 20814. ACOTE's contact number via AOTA is (301) 652-AOTA, and its website is www.acoteonline.org. Full accreditation, contingent upon an on-site review, is required for graduates to qualify for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam. Passing this exam grants the Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR) credential. State licensure, typically dependent on NBCOT exam results, is mandatory for practice. Note that felony convictions may impact exam eligibility or licensure.
