The Master of Arts in Sociology delivers distinctive learning experiences through diverse courses covering theory, research methodology, criminology, social psychology, social inequality, and more. Students gain hands-on research experience by working alongside faculty, enabling them to design a personalized curriculum that stimulates intellectual growth. Prospective students must demonstrate foundational knowledge equivalent to 3 semester hours each in sociological theory, research methods, and statistics. Those lacking these prerequisites may need to complete remedial coursework promptly after enrollment. The graduate advisor will notify accepted students about any required deficiency courses. The Sociology Department allocates dedicated spots in the M.A. program for NIU University Honors students pursuing Sociology majors.
