The Master of Arts in Art program mandates at least 30 semester hours of graduate-level coursework. Candidates seeking specialization in either art history research or art history teaching need to provide an academic writing sample. The art history research track prepares students for doctoral studies, equipping them for careers as professional art historians and educators. Exceptional undergraduate performers from non-art history disciplines may also qualify for admission. Research specialization students must: fulfill 30 semester-hour requirements, complete either a thesis or master's research project, pass a comprehensive examination, and prove proficiency in one modern foreign language (typically French, German, or Italian for doctoral-bound students, though alternative languages may be approved by the graduate advisory committee). Undergraduate coursework must include ARTH 486; otherwise, ARTH 586 becomes a requirement.
