For those dedicated to supporting students with disabilities, our Department of Special and Early Education provides four Bachelor of Science in Education degree options. This program equips you to make a meaningful impact on individuals with diverse disabilities throughout their lives. While graduates can work in private organizations, community environments, agencies, and other service providers, this degree does not lead to Illinois state professional educator licensure. Individuals with disabilities accomplish extraordinary achievements—successes often made possible through the support of compassionate advocates who help them reach their full potential. NIU's hands-on, research-based Special Education: Special Populations program trains you to become one of these transformative professionals for people with various disabilities across all life stages. While this qualification allows you to work in private institutions, community programs, agencies, and similar settings, it does not provide Illinois state certification for professional educators.
