This program equips you to tackle modern issues in transportation, structural systems, and environmental sectors using creative, applied approaches. Your coursework will provide the foundational knowledge to recognize, design, and execute practical solutions while building professional networks and competencies to steer your career path. The program aims to cultivate future leaders for both industry and academia in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Students achieve this through a doctoral curriculum fostering close faculty collaboration across four specialization areas: Transportation, Water Resources, Structures, and Environmental. Our faculty specialize in transportation systems, safety engineering, bridge and pavement design, structural monitoring, rural water systems, and environmental quality control. The program promotes interdisciplinary partnerships with other NAU departments including Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Informatics, Bioengineering Innovation, Materials Science, Earth Sciences, Geography, Biology, Business, and Social Sciences. The degree requirements include core Infrastructure courses, specialized coursework in your chosen focus area, and an original research project culminating in a dissertation and defense.
