The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering provides graduate programs for both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Each student collaborates with an advisor to customize their academic path based on their background and research interests. Specialization areas available for master's and doctoral students encompass Intelligent Infrastructure, Environment and Health, Transportation and Mobility, and Resilience and Sustainability. These civil and environmental engineering programs deliver specialized knowledge in structural engineering, pavement systems, environmental engineering, and water resource management. Beyond coursework, Ph.D. candidates must successfully complete a qualifying examination and defend their research proposal. Additionally, all doctoral students are required to pass a final oral dissertation defense before a committee of five graduate faculty members.
Applicants for admission should hold a B.S. degree in civil engineering. However, applicants with undergraduate degrees in other disciplines may be accepted with the stipulation that deficiencies in prerequisite undergraduate coursework be corrected before enrolling in graduate courses. In addition to the requirements set forth by the Graduate School, applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 to apply to the Doctoral Program.
