This program equips nurses with specialized training to support vulnerable children in urban environments throughout their healthcare journey. For over 20 years, our pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) curriculum has trained primary care PNPs to deliver culturally responsive community healthcare. Recently, we've extended our evidence-based, interdisciplinary urban health approach by adding an acute care PNP track - making us New England's sole graduate nursing program offering this specialty.
The School of Nursing provides two pediatric nurse practitioner pathways. The primary care track trains students to become PNPs specializing in wellness visits, preventive care, and treatment of routine acute and chronic conditions. The dual track combines primary care training with acute care preparation, enabling graduates to handle complex, critical illnesses in diverse clinical environments.
All master's candidates complete core coursework in professional studies, research, clinical practice, and specialty clinical training. The Primary Care PNP program spans 41 credit hours and qualifies graduates for Pediatric Primary Care certification. Students may opt for dual certification in both acute and primary care PNP specialties. Those pursuing Acute Care PNP certification complete an additional 11 credit hours. The curriculum provides comprehensive training in advanced pathophysiology, health assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and specialized nursing interventions for pediatric patients across all care settings.
