This program fulfills the criteria for the Associate of Arts-Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA) degree with a specialization in Civic Engagement. The Civic Engagement track prepares students who want to contribute to community civic life by cultivating knowledge, abilities, principles, and drive to create meaningful change. It involves enhancing community well-being through both governmental and non-governmental avenues. (Adapted from Civic Responsibility and Higher Education, edited by Thomas Ehrlich, Oryx Press, 2000, Preface, page vi.) Furthermore, civic engagement includes participation in activities that enrich personal lives while benefiting society.
The Civic Engagement program expands students' learning by emphasizing connections with communities on social, political, and cultural matters across diverse degree paths. It's especially relevant for careers in community organizations, social services, government, public policy, nonprofits, advocacy, public humanities, lobbying, education, media, law, and business. Participants develop organizational navigation skills while honing competencies in communication, critical analysis, research methods, digital tools, teamwork, leadership, and cross-cultural understanding.
