Pre-professional degree programs typically span four years of undergraduate study. Students then usually complete three to four more years in a specialized professional school. Although state-funded professional institutions often prioritize local applicants, Minnesota residents enrolled at NDSU who apply to the University of Minnesota Medical School receive equal consideration as in-state students who completed pre-med studies within Minnesota. Likewise, the University of North Dakota (UND) Medical School treats North Dakota residents equally, whether they graduated from NDSU, UND, or another accredited university. Doctors examine patients, identify medical conditions, and develop treatment plans for injuries and illnesses. They may specialize in various fields such as anesthesiology, family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, psychiatry, or surgical disciplines.
