The Department of Sociology and Anthropology provides both Master of Science (M.S.) and Master of Arts (M.A.) degrees in Anthropology. This program focuses on humanity's cultural and material legacy across time - past, present, and future - while emphasizing that graduate-level anthropological training prepares students for diverse career paths. Each student develops an individualized study plan with guidance from their academic advisor. Beyond coursework, graduate students are encouraged to participate in professional activities like academic presentations, conference attendance, campus/community service, and teaching/research assistantships to complement their studies. Our alumni have secured positions in various fields including higher education, archaeological contracting, folklore program direction, international studies administration, National Park Service archaeology, nonprofit event coordination, overseas English instruction, and cultural research analysis.
Anthropology graduate education aims to prepare both applied anthropologists and those planning doctoral studies. Students can choose to specialize in particular areas or maintain a broader anthropological foundation. Available specializations encompass cultural anthropology and archaeology.
