The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. Additionally, the department contributes to the interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology.
New graduate students begin their first year by taking placement exams covering chemistry, biochemistry, and key subdisciplines. These assessments help the graduate committee customize each student's initial coursework plan.
Advanced coursework and research explore chemical and biological processes across diverse organisms. Students choose their specialization based on personal interests. Most M.S. candidates finish required courses within 12-18 months, while Ph.D. candidates typically complete theirs in two years, dedicating remaining time to dissertation work. On average, students earn their M.S. in three years and their Ph.D. in about five years.
The Ph.D. program mandates 90 post-bachelor's graduate credits with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
