The Chemistry and Biochemistry Ph.D. program immerses students in rigorous academic study and cutting-edge research alongside distinguished faculty members. Participants master essential chemical and biochemical concepts to pioneer innovative solutions for critical issues in healthcare, education, sustainability, and energy production.
Students can specialize in diverse research fields such as bioanalytical chemistry, biophysical studies, inorganic/bioinorganic chemistry, organic synthesis, natural product research, integrative medicine, and chemical education methodologies.
The department boasts exceptional teaching faculty, featuring two recipients of UNCG's Alumni Teaching Excellence Award, four College of Arts and Sciences Teaching Excellence honorees, and one UNC Board of Governors Teaching Excellence Award winner.
Faculty research receives support from prestigious organizations including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, North Carolina Biotechnology Center, and the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund.
This program maintains accreditation from the American Chemical Society.
Students entering the program are required to have completed a BS degree in chemistry or biochemistry or related areas with appropriate chemical/pharmaceutical/biological sciences background. This background will include courses in organic chemistry (one year plus lab), biochemistry (one year plus lab), analytical chemistry, and physical chemistry.
English Language Proficiency: TOEFL: internet based - 79, or paper based - 550. A score of at least 6.5 is required on the IELTS.
