Students pursuing a family and consumer sciences education degree gain the skills to facilitate diverse instructional experiences for learners in grades 5-12, whether in vocational or academic programs, adult education, or extension services. The curriculum emphasizes practical training to refine teaching competencies alongside theoretical coursework. The program encompasses all facets of family and consumer sciences - from human development and family studies to food science, fashion, and financial literacy - creating a comprehensive foundation. This multidisciplinary approach enhances career flexibility, enabling graduates to work in various educational and professional contexts as either instructors or family science specialists.
Education students can register for 300-level teaching methodology courses before official acceptance into the School of Education (SOE). To progress to 400-level coursework, candidates must submit an SOE admission application, maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA across all subjects and education classes, and achieve passing scores on either the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam or the ACT.
