Horticulture combines scientific knowledge and creative artistry to cultivate, enhance, distribute, and utilize fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants. Unlike botany and similar plant studies, horticulture uniquely blends technical expertise with aesthetic expression. This field traces its roots to ancient gardens while embracing modern advancements like genetic modification. Horticulture serves as both a professional industry and personal pursuit. Growing and eating quality produce supports nutritious daily eating habits. Decorative flora beautifies living spaces and public areas while enhancing mental health. Daily, horticulture nourishes us with wholesome foods, delights our senses, and facilitates leisure pursuits.
The Plant Sciences Department provides a four-year horticulture program culminating in a Bachelor of Science degree. Students can specialize in six concentrations: horticultural science, landscape architecture, landscape maintenance, commercial production, sports and urban turf management, or urban forestry and park systems.
