The department provides three undergraduate theatre degree options, all adaptable to students' professional aspirations. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in theatre arts combines a liberal arts foundation with essential training in technical theatre, performance, directing, literature, theatre history, and modern languages, including second-year foreign language proficiency. For those preferring a different path, the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) offers an alternative, requiring completion of an approved minor. The professionally-focused Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) program, available with concentrations in musical theatre, performance, or design technology, emphasizes practical studio work alongside academic rigor. Admission to this selective program requires an audition and ongoing participation in Theatre NDSU and LCT Productions, demonstrating significant dedication. Theatre NDSU serves as an educational laboratory where creativity meets discipline, maintaining exceptional professional standards throughout its two primary initiatives: (1) Main Stage Productions, featuring four annual performances spanning modern musicals like Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson and Sweeney Todd to classical works such as The Comedy of Errors, following a four-year stylistic rotation to expose students to diverse Western theatrical traditions, including Devised theatre and Theatre for Young Audiences; and (2) The Newfangled Theatre Company, a student-run organization presenting up to four second-stage productions annually. Additional opportunities include Studio Theatre Productions, B.F.A. showcases, student-directed projects, and semesterly dance recitals.
