The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre with a Performance Concentration provides comprehensive training in both the theoretical and practical aspects of theatrical performance. This program offers foundational through advanced coursework covering diverse acting methodologies, performance techniques, and introductory concepts in performance vocabulary. Students explore Western internal techniques (such as Stanislavski and Meisner) rooted in action, objective, and tactic frameworks, alongside external approaches (including Suzuki, clowning, and commedia) that emphasize character development through vocal and physical expression.
Beyond the core CSU Theatre Program Learning Outcomes, the Performance Concentration establishes these specialized objectives:
THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE: Cultivate a distinctive artistic perspective by mastering progressive techniques essential for stage performance. This includes drawing from personal narratives for storytelling, employing Western internal methods focused on action, objective, and tactic, as well as movement-based external techniques centered on vocal and physical expression, plus devising methods incorporating memoir, adaptation, and physical theatre.
ARTISTIC PERFORMANCE: Foster recognition of the performer as both a collaborative creator and innovative visionary, while developing interdisciplinary competencies in directing, playwriting, international theatre practices, musical theatre, and/or socially engaged performance to enhance artistic depth.
