Coastal engineering involves examining natural processes and human influences affecting shorelines, inlets, estuaries, and coastal regions. This academic program equips students with diverse engineering expertise to address changing demands in coastal water and wetland design, planning, and management. Graduate students may specialize in key disciplines such as coastal engineering, environmental fluid dynamics, marine and estuarine hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and landform evolution. Researchers, including both students and faculty, investigate coastal hazard forecasting (such as flood risks from storms and contaminant movement), water circulation patterns in estuaries and sounds, and the gradual transformation of coastal landscapes over various timescales.
