The M.A. in English program provides four specialized tracks reflecting key aspects of our field: Literature, Linguistics, Rhetoric and Composition, and Film Studies. These concentrations, while united in their focus on research and analytical skills, present varied approaches to examining culture and language across different contexts. Our linguistics track has earned widespread recognition as a premier sociolinguistics program nationally and globally. Remarkably, just four years after its launch, The Real Guide to Graduate School (Lingua Franca, 1997) ranked it among North America's top five sociolinguistics programs. NC State stands out as the sole master's-level program on this prestigious list, which otherwise features renowned doctoral programs like those at the University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown University.
