The M.A. in English program provides four specialized tracks reflecting key aspects of our field: Literature, Linguistics, Rhetoric and Composition, and Film Studies. These concentrations, while united in their focus on research and analytical skills, present varied approaches to examining culture and language across different contexts. Our linguistics track has earned widespread recognition as a premier sociolinguistics program nationally and globally. Remarkably, just four years after its launch, The Real Guide to Graduate School (Lingua Franca, 1997) ranked it among North America's top five sociolinguistics programs. Qualification Requirements
The successful applicant to the M.A. program is typically an undergraduate English major with at least a 3.0 in all courses -- but especially in English courses.Admissions rules require that an applicant have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
have successfully (cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher) completed at least one year of full-time study in a degree program at a regionally accredited four-year US College or university.
IELTS scores with an overall band score of at least 6.5. Minimum test scores for each section are listed below: Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.5, Speaking 6.5
TOEFL with a total score of at least 80 on the Internet-based Test (iBT), and with minimum test scores for each section of: Listening 18 points, Reading 18 points, Writing 18 points.
Computer-based TOEFL scores must be 213 or higher (with at least 17 on three sections and no section score below 13). The paper-based test requires a score of 550 or higher (with scores of 50 on at least two of the three sections and no section score below 45).
