Pursue vocal performance studies with a focus on musical theater. Our program combines comprehensive instruction in singing, acting, and movement through rigorous workshops, academic courses, and one-on-one coaching with our distinguished faculty and industry experts. You'll showcase your talents in full-scale productions directed by seasoned professionals including directors, choreographers, conductors, and designers. Our curriculum establishes a robust framework of proper vocal technique to support your career aspirations in any vocal performance field. Course offerings include script interpretation, dramaturgy, music critique, film scoring, therapeutic music applications, and musical theater history, alongside specialized training in private voice lessons, vocal coaching, musical theater workshops, and acting. Elective options cover audition techniques and theatrical dance. Each semester features intensive musical theater workshops concentrating on song interpretation, character development, stylistic approaches, and vocal technique. You'll learn acting and dance from active industry professionals while receiving vocal instruction from top New York performers. The program also encourages interdisciplinary exploration, allowing you to receive classical voice training and participate in opera workshops and full productions.

Qualification Requirements

Basic competence in music theory and history is a prerequisite for all graduate degree programs in music. Entering graduate students are required to complete a music theory entrance exam and meet history coursework requirements. Based on exam results and review of the student's transcript, up to 8 points of remedial music theory and/or history coursework may be required. Remedial courses cannot be used to meet degree requirements.
You must have the equivalent of a regionally accredited four-year US bachelor's degree before beginning your studies at NYU Steinhardt to be considered for admission.
