NYU Journalism's Global & Joint Program Studies offers students comprehensive journalistic education combined with specialized cultural or regional studies through a joint MA degree with one of eight globally-oriented master's programs. Limited to 15 students per class, the program provides hands-on experience across multiple media formats, equipping graduates with both journalistic expertise and deep cultural understanding.

To see GloJo in action, connect with us on Twitter and Facebook. We share updates on faculty and student accomplishments, published work, and photo stories documenting our events, celebrations, and fieldwork. Attend one of our seasonal GloJo gatherings. Each year, a chosen cohort can pursue a dual M.A. in Journalism paired with Africana Studies, French Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Near Eastern Studies, Russian and Slavic Studies, European and Mediterranean Studies, East Asian Studies, or International Relations. GloJo intentionally bridges academic fields and media formats while maintaining an intimate size. It's tailored for globally-minded students with regional expertise and relevant language skills. The program enhances cultural knowledge while preparing graduates for journalism careers and related professions. The journalism curriculum emphasizes rigorous training in research, reporting, and writing across all formats, along with advanced multimedia skills.

Qualification Requirements

The Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute considers applicants holding a bachelor's degree in any field. A journalism background is not required. Along with the completed application, the applicant must provide one official transcript from each undergraduate or graduate institution attended, three letters of recommendation, preferably from your professors, and two writing samples. These samples should be indicative of the applicant's best overall work and need not have been published. They should include at least one academic paper or senior thesis that demonstrates the student's critical thinking ability and another that showcases the student's writing ability. A statement of purpose, which should adhere to the guidelines listed in the journalism application form, is also required. NYU graduate admission requires four years of prior undergraduate studies.

The GRE exam is not required. For some of our partner programs the GRE is optional and scores will be considered if submitted. See individual program requirements for more information. International applicants must take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) unless English is their native language or they have completed their undergraduate education at an institution where English is the primary language of instruction. A minimum TOEFL score of 100 on the Internet-based test, equivalent to a score of 250 on the computer-based test or 600 on the paper-based test, is preferred. For the IELTS, a minimum overall band score of at least 7 is recommended.

Note for International Applicants

You must receive your undergraduate degree (U.S. baccalaureate or equivalent) from an institution of recognized standing before enrollment in the Graduate School. Students from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Bangladesh must show completion of both the baccalaureate and master's examinations prior to registration in the Graduate School.
