Hone your artistic skills in both conventional and unconventional performance venues, apply your expertise in educational and community settings, and learn from top theatre instructors. You'll examine ideas through dramatic techniques and theatrical forms in classrooms and performances while training to become a theatre practitioner and educator in schools. This program qualifies you for New York State initial certification. You'll undertake studies in drama, theatre literature, and performance, aligned with New York's four Arts Learning Standards. Using an inquiry-driven teaching approach, you'll take foundational methods courses connecting theory to application, while developing a richer comprehension of teaching theatre as an art and incorporating drama across academic subjects at various grade levels. Master unique teaching methods and approaches that are creative and effective for instructing drama and theatre to contemporary K-12 students. Qualification Requirements

You must have completed the following content core requirements for your intended teaching certification area, as regulated by the New York State Education Department, prior to enrollment:

30 semester hours of drama, theatre, dramatic literature, or an equivalent
If you have fewer than 30 points or credits in these areas on admission, you will be required to take additional course work in educational theatre.

We review all applications individually and holistically, but our expectation is that successful candidates for admission to any NYU Steinhardt MA program in teacher education will have a minimum 3.0 undergraduate grade point average. Special consideration may be granted to strong candidates with a GPA below 3.0.

You must have the equivalent of a regionally accredited four-year US bachelor's degree before beginning your studies at NYU Steinhardt to be considered for admission.
