Combining social studies with theater creates a dynamic learning experience, enabling students to examine historical events through dramatic techniques. This program qualifies graduates for New York State initial certification in both theater and social studies education. You'll develop expertise in social studies and drama, master teaching methodologies, and gain practical experience via fieldwork and student teaching. With guidance from faculty advisors, you'll design a customized course sequence that aligns with your interests, choosing from offerings in research, pedagogy, theatrical arts, and community-based approaches. The curriculum covers: US and global history, World theater traditions, Educational drama techniques, Using theater to address societal concerns, Interactive drama methods for teaching with primary sources, historical themes, eras, discussions, and texts.
This degree features interdisciplinary coursework connecting drama, theatrical literature, and performance to New York State's four Learning Standards for both subjects. Students may specialize in areas like Applied Theater, Drama in Education, or Youth Theater and Play Production, or craft an individualized study plan with faculty approval.
