The Spanish and Portuguese PhD program offers intensive academic study paired with personalized research in Spanish, Latin American, and/or Luso-Brazilian linguistics and literary studies.
Program participants collaborate with distinguished faculty members who specialize in diverse fields and research topics. The program also features an international cohort of students from 12 nations, bringing varied educational and career experiences.
Departmental research spans historical periods from medieval Iberia and colonial Latin America to modern literary works, cultural expressions, and artistic movements, employing analytical frameworks from visual analysis, performance theory, cultural criticism, European philosophy, psychological theory, postcolonial analysis, gender studies, cinema studies, political theory, and moral philosophy, alongside other approaches.
Regularly recognized as one of the nation's top programs, it draws exceptionally qualified applicants each year. The Department usually enrolls four to six students with full financial support every academic cycle.
