Students focusing on Middle Eastern history should apply to the combined Ph.D. program in history and Middle Eastern studies, following the application guidelines set by the Departments of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies and History. Acceptance into the joint program depends on exceptional academic achievement and remains conditional until all M.A. prerequisites and qualifying exams are successfully completed.
Participants in the joint Ph.D. program need to earn 72 credits total, which includes three graduate seminars, with at least one seminar outside Middle Eastern studies. Proficiency in one Middle Eastern language is required, following the Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies' guidelines, along with reading competency in one European language as specified by the History Department. Additional language study may be mandated by the dissertation advisor based on the student's research requirements.
Early specialization in historical fields is encouraged. Joint program candidates must complete the methodology course required for all history graduate students. During their second or third year of full-time study, students must pass comprehensive exams in two major historical fields—one must focus on the Middle East, while the other can be either Middle Eastern or another field recognized by the History Department. Potential Middle Eastern fields, depending on faculty availability, include modern (1750-present), early modern (1200-1800), and early Islamic history (600-1200), with possible additions later. Both departments' graduate studies directors must approve each student's chosen fields.
