New York University's History Department provides exceptional doctoral training in African History. This dynamic field pushes boundaries by rethinking traditional geographic and chronological frameworks.
African history faculty mentor students to develop deep expertise while maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the field's broader landscape. Key research themes encompass: gender studies, Islamic and religious studies, slavery and labor systems, colonialism and resistance movements, social and cultural history, public health, economic networks across and beyond Africa, diverse governance structures, and development economics.
The History Department provides graduate programs at both master's and doctoral levels, covering national, comparative, and transnational studies across multiple regions: Africa, the African diaspora, the Atlantic world, East Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, South Asia, and the United States. Interdisciplinary PhD options include French History (with the Institute of French Studies), Hebrew and Judaic Studies (with the Skirball Department), and Middle Eastern studies (with the Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies). Students can focus on comparative or thematic methodologies, either within their primary specialization or as a secondary concentration.
